Scouts Celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday at Water Weekend

District Water Activities Camp at Decoy Broad has, over the years, established itself as one of the most popular events for the Scout Section. The weekend camp was established 10 years ago by Simon Mobbs who was, at that time, the ADC (Scouts) and over the year’s its popularity with the scouts has grown.

This year there was a competition to design the logo for a camp T shirt. The winning design was printed in blue onto orange shirts which were given to all participants. The winner of the competition was Mason Gostling from 1st Horsford & St Faiths Scout Group who was presented with a framed design on the Saturday morning.
140 Scouts from 12 out of the 13 groups in the District began their activity packed weekend with some favourites like Kayaks, Sailing, Rafting, Crate Stacking, Archery, Air Rifle Shooting and Backwoods Cooking. New activities for this year included Sit-on canoes, Slackline, Climbing the Wobbly Ladder and Gigs, which proved to be very popular on the Sunday.

Unfortunately, the now customary “Tug of War” contest on the Saturday evening had to be cancelled due to a very slippery wet ground following the torrential rain in the late afternoon. On the Saturday evening “Mad Mike” and “Scary” conducted a very enjoyable and sometimes extremely noisy campfire, with the Scouts doing various stunts.

P1050800Sunday morning started with a Scouts Own and as it was the Queen’s Birthday the parade ground was decorated with Union Jack bunting and a giant ”90” made out of balloons was constructed on the parade square. The Scouts and leaders sang Happy Birthday to her Majesty and everyone enjoyed a piece of birthday cake.

The Sunday activities were again interrupted by a heavy rain storm which fortunately only delayed things for a short time.

My thanks to the leaders who supported the camp, not only by providing the equipment and instructors to lead the activities, but also to those who transported the camping equipment and preparing the meals, as well as ensuring that there was always a hot drink available for those who needed it.
