District Commissioner reflects on a busy few months

Hi to you all,

I just wanted to take this opportunity, as I get ready to enjoy travelling with David in our CamperVan in Europe, to reflect on the first few months of being your District Commissioner in Northern Norwich.

What can I say? It’s been a great few months.  My personal thanks to the District Team for their support – some challenges have presented themselves, but these have been more than outnumbered by the fantastic opportunities and events enjoyed by our young people (and I like to think, our Leaders & Helpers).

Across the District we’ve made progress uniting the Network membership across 3 Districts (Northern, Eastern and Southern), had Section Hikes (such competition amongst the Scout Troops!), Explorers Hill-Walking in Derbyshire, the Beaver 30th Birthday Party Celebration at Taverham, District Master-At-Arms Competitions, St. George’s Day Parade and Service, Cubs 100 Camp, Beavers Birthday Camp, Group/Section run camps: 3rd & 4th Norwich, 1st Spixworth, 16th Norwich, 25th & 18th Norwich, 1st Drayton, 11th Norwich, 2nd Reepham, 1st Taverham, 44th Norwich, District WAM (Water Activity Mayhem) Camp (at which nearly all of our Scout Troops were able to attend), Scout Survival Camp, ASU led Derbyshire Hill-Walking, Cubs 100 Wacky Races, County Archery Competition and let’s not forget the badge work which forms part of the regular section meetings, the Cub 100 Challenges & Beaver 30 Challenges, together with the Chief Scout Awards across the Sections too… the list seems endless!

Many of the Groups have already held their AGM and it’s been a pleasure to attend these meetings, to have the opportunity to meet with the Executive members (and let’s not underestimate the value of the band of helpers we all call upon to support at specific events through the year) who work so diligently behind the scenes, but also to celebrate what your Groups and young people have achieved and to appreciate what great teams of Leaders we have working together to provide Scouting in our District at such an impressive level.

One of the most memorable things I’ve experienced has been the support and teamwork amongst the Leaders – not only at District and Group level – but across the Sections in supporting each other to provide Camps, activities etc.  This is truly impressive and really shows an inner strength in Northern Norwich which results in being able to offer great Scouting in our District. Thank you.

I appreciate some of you will be continuing your Scouting through the Summer; for those of you who have an opportunity to take a break with families & friends etc – I hope you enjoy it and look forward to seeing you at our Full District Meeting on Monday, 5th September.
