Celebrating Determination and Achievement

In the midst of the AGM season, it was a great privilege for me to be invited along to the end of term Beaver Colony meeting at the 44th Norwich Scout Group, ahead of the Group’s AGM the following week.

I’d heard a rumour that one of their Beaver Scouts had earned every badge under the Beaver Scout programme and was keen to go along and meet the Beaver, especially as one of the badges under the programme was sailing.

George Atkinson had joined the Puma Beaver Colony in 2015, just before his 6th birthday.  Since that time he had worked determinedly, both at the Colony meetings and in his own time at home, to complete each of the badges within the programme and complete his personal goal.  This had culminated in a taster day at Filby Broad which had been arranged by his mum and dad as a means to achieve the Sailing Staged Activity badge.

Such determination and a resolve to achieve are certainly worthy of recognition and it gave me great pleasure a week later at the Group AGM to present George with a County Commissioner’s Commendation.

At the same time George’s twin sister Maisie, who had previously been a Rainbow and decided to join Beavers shortly after her brother, was awarded with her Chief Scout Bronze Award.  I’m sure it won’t be long before she matches her brother’s achievements regarding the Beaver programme!

I look forward to hearing more from George and Maisie and their progress through the Cub Pack and beyond as their scouting journey continue.

Well done George and Maisie.
