Explorer Scout Summer Camp in Wales

Explorer Scouts from Nelson Victory and HAndS ESU’s enjoyed a week’s summer camp in North Wales in August this year.

They started with a 9 hour journey across the country to a Scout Campsite in Colwyn Bay!  After setting up and late tea the first day came to an end quite quickly, but Saturday came and we were all up and rearing to go.  The Explorers were split in to two teams, one team was dropped off and walked south to Conwy Bay from Great Ormes Head and the other north.

Sunday we enjoyed the weather and explored the local town of Llandudno and a fish and chip lunch.

Monday we set off the tackle Snowdon; it was grey and damp, but all 20 of us made it too the top in high spirts.  The Explorers were a credit to themselves, encouraging everyone in the group and being patient with those at the back.

Tuesday we had a day onsite with a surprise activity for the Explorers; a Bouncy Castle, Superhero Sumo Suits and an inflatable obstacle run were ours for the day.  All the Explorers enjoyed the day and we were very lucky with the weather.  The leaders had to have a go as well – we couldn’t let the young people have all the fun!  We finished the day with a “locked room challenge” and a “rock tasting challenge”.  Many were surprised by the odd flavours involved including Prosecco (non alcoholic, of course), Bubblegum and even Cornish Pasty!

Wednesday we travelled to the Underground Caves and took part in a High Ropes course (a bit like Go-Ape but underground).  Many fears were conquered that day and a lot of fun was had by all.

Thursday was a wet day – white water rafting at the National White Water Centre!!  A fantastic day over all three rafts, enjoying four high speed one mile runs down the fast flowing river.  There was no danger of staying dry!

Friday – our final day, but definitely one to remember.  To break up our journey home we were lucky enough to stop off at the National Memorial Arboretum in Birmingham.  Our tour guide, Shelly O’Keefe, took us to some key memorials, finishing at the Scout Campfire.  There we took a chance to reflect on our time away and cleaned the monument a little before the final journey home.

Other activites during the week included glass engraving, paracord makes, puzzles, card games, make your own pizzas and nail painting!

The Explorers were a credit to themselves and Norfolk Scouts.  Everyone pulled their weight with chores, no one fell out and all were respectful to each other, making it a very pleasant week all round.  A special thank you to all the leaders for making it possible.
