St George’s Day Celebration Sunday 29th April 2018

What a difference a week makes!

Glorious sunshine for those celebrating St George’s Day, either within our Scouting county of Norfolk or further afield collecting awards at Windsor.

On Sunday 29th April Northern Norwich celebrated the Patron Saint of St George – yes the weather was wet and dreary but this didn’t dampen our spirits as we gathered at The Halls in Norwich to mark this special occasion in our Scouting calendar.

A valiant team came together to facilitate the event; the Colours were bought in to the Hall and, led by our Network Section, our young people’s achievements through the Top Awards were acknowledged. There were presentations from 18th Norwich Beavers, who sang the Banana Song (a new one for me!), 1st Drayton Cubs singing the 3 Knights and Scouts teaching us that it always pays to ‘Be Prepared’. There was also a presentation of a Queen’s Scout Award to James Delph, one of Network members (and an Explorer Leader to boot).

The presentations were followed by our renewal of Promises, led by representatives from each Section, and culminating with the award of the St George’s Flag before the Colours were returned and the event brought to a close.

Another change this year: the award of the St George Flag. This was previously being rotated around the Groups in the District, but this year awarded to the Group considered most deserving after considering a range of criteria. It was not an easy decision to make and, against strong competition, the 3rd & 4th Norwich were awarded the Flag this year – a Group who have achieved across all criteria. Sincere congratulations to all at the Group.

It was great to see members of the Groups in the District come together – a realisation for some of the youngest members, and a reminder perhaps for others – that we are part of a larger Scouting family, and that is certainly something worth celebrating.

Thank you.
