Spring in our Scouting Step at Awards Night

Spring in our Scouting Step at Awards Night

District Commissioner Caz Barr welcomed 50 young people and their families to the most recent Northern Norwich Scout District Celebration of Scouting Achievements awards evening held at St Catherine’s Church, Aylsham Road, Norwich on Friday 20th March.

Young people were recognised and awards were presented in three categories:

  • Chief Scouts Awards
  • Young Leader Belt and Buckle Award
  • Outstanding Achievement Award

Chief Scouts Awards

The Chief Scouts Award is the highest award that can be gained in each of the Beaver, Cub & Scout sections and 30 Bronze, 13 Silver and 4 Gold award holders attended and received achievement certificates from Matthew Burrell, Deputy County Commissioner (Youth Programme and Development) at Norfolk Scouts.

There are far too many individuals to mention but you can take a look at a gallery of all of the recipients here.

Young Leader Awards

-Custom-Themes-BADGES-Young_Leader-Young-Leader_module-A-badge-Full-RGBThe Young Leader Belt and Buckle is the recognition of the achievements of 14 to 18 year old Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting giving service to another section. They do this by helping weekly at the Beaver, Cub or Scout section meetings as part of the leadership team.

The Young Leader scheme helps Explorers to develop and grow as individuals and allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps the Young Leader to earn other Explorer Scout and Duke of Edinburgh awards.

To gain the award the Young Leaders have to complete a rigorous training scheme covering such things as first aid, programme planning and leadership skills. They also have to complete 4 missions by providing indoor and outdoor activities, assisting with the delivery of a badge and maintaining records.

Having completed all of their missions, the Young Leader Belt and Buckle was awarded to Louis Dipple, a Young Leader with 3rd & 4th Norwich Sea Scout Group, and Jade Pettifer, a Young Leader at the 16th Norwich Sea Scout Group.

Outstanding Achievement

The final award of the evening was the Outstanding Achievement Award which was awarded to Rory Caley, Jessica Jolly and Ethan Jones, scouts at the 44th Norwich Scout Group in Old Catton.

One day, in early January, the three young people were walking along the road when they saw a lady who looked in trouble. She needed immediate medical assistance. The three didn’t walk past; they were scouts; they remembered what they had learnt at a scout meeting about first aid and they remembered their promise to “help other people”. Even though they weren’t in scout uniform, they sprang into action.

They worked as a team, were very level headed, very brave and talked to her confidently the whole time they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The lady was so grateful to the three young people for quite literally saving her life. She was also very grateful they looked after her 2 dogs Bert and Ernie!

These young people action made them a credit to scouting, a credit to their families, but most of all a credit to themselves. Everybody in the District would like to say a huge well done to them and all of the hard working recipients that night.
