Explorers at the Foodbank

Explorers at the Foodbank

Nelsons Victory Explorers were kindly invited to help at at the Norwich Foodbank this week.

We were shown how the foodbank operates from food donation, weighing the foods in, sorting into types, sorting into date order, sorting according to nutrition required, to the final boxing up of food parcels be it single, double, family or kettle (where the recipient only has access to hot water).

We then helped to sort countless tins (mainly beans and soup – never seen so many!) into date order ready for next years distribution to make sure the oldest are used first.

The next process was to sort donated items into different categories including items the Explorers had donated as well as items from Norjam.

The Explorers had an exceptional, enjoyable, enthusiastic evening but did start to tire by the end.

It was estimated by the centre manager that by the number of crates sorted we saved the foodbank volunteers about 2 – 3 weeks work which was really appreciated!

The foodbank is now coming up to its busiest period of the year with the harvest festival donations and then onto Christmas.
